Today is the day. After weeks of anticipation, whispers, and the bittersweet knowledge that this moment was coming, our beloved pandas are making their journey home.

My heart feels a little heavier today, a quiet ache that you might also recognize when saying goodbye to someone special. Perhaps it’s a pet who became part of your family, just like my four cats who purr their joy for being together, and whose every meow I believe I understand. That unique bond, where an animal becomes so much more than just a creature, is something many of us know well.
For so long, these pandas have been a comforting constant, a symbol of hope and gentle beauty that touched so many lives here in Shirahama and beyond. Every drive around town, seeing reminders like billboards, posters, and artifacts of this panda family’s presence, fills me with memories of our many visits to Adventure World. Most often, I smile. But today, those views carry a touch of wistfulness.
It’s not just about an animal leaving; it’s about a chapter closing, a daily dose of joy and wonder that’s now becoming a treasured memory for us all.
Just a few days ago, when we pulled into Adventure World, the parking lot was fuller than I’d ever seen it. Car license plates indicated visitors from all parts of the country, confirming what we already knew: these pandas are loved by so many here in Japan. Inside the park, the line for panda viewings was the longest, and every staff member and guest we talked to expressed their sadness to see this panda family leave.

These pandas have become such a central focus for Shirahama’s economy, especially domestic tourism, that we can’t help but wonder how the town will fill the inevitable gap that will emerge after today.

As I shared last month, their departure marks a huge success for conservation, and that’s something truly worth celebrating. But today, for many of us, the feeling is less about the grand achievement and more about the personal goodbye.
So, as they embark on their journey, join me in sending them off with a silent “thank you” for all the smiles, the quiet moments of peace, and the magic they brought to our lives here.
