Do you ever dream of exploring Japan in summer, only to be hit by a wave of dread thinking about the stifling heat and suffocating humidity? My wife and I know that feeling all too well. We’ve even embraced car camping recently, outfitting our vehicle with battery-powered fans and a portable air conditioner for comfortable nights on the road. But when we tried it in Osaka recently while visiting friends, even with all our gear, it was nearly impossible to get a good night’s sleep. We tossed and turned, endured the stickiness, and woke up the next day feeling more “ugh” than refreshed. It makes you wonder if a summer trip to Japan is even worth it if you’re constantly battling the heat.
But imagine this: just a short while later, we were car camping again, this time deep in the Japan Alps. Instead of fanning ourselves furiously, we actually pulled out a light blanket! The air was crisp and cool, and we slept soundly through the night. It’s moments like these that prove there’s a different, wonderfully refreshing side to summer in Japan, and it’s found in the breathtaking Nagano Prefecture. It’s so captivating that I’ve already made two trips here this summer! So, what exactly makes this part of Japan such an irresistible destination, especially when you’re looking to escape the sweltering heat?

Beat the Summer Heat in Style
Last summer, Japan experienced record-breaking temperatures, and it looks like this summer is set to follow suit. The heat and humidity in most of Japan during summer can be intense, to the point that I don’t even like sleeping with a blanket! However, the temperatures in the Japan Alps are far more comfortable, and I find myself sweating significantly less. As our car camping experience demonstrated, you actually need a blanket at night due to the coolness. It’s truly a breath of fresh air, away from the scorching heat of the cities.
"Forest Bathing" and Wonderful Wildlife Encounters
The Japanese concept of “Shinrinyoku,” (森林浴) or “forest bathing,” isn’t about getting wet; it’s about fully immersing yourself in the serene beauty of nature. Here in the Japan Alps, you’ll find refreshment and rejuvenation from the slower pace and the peaceful embrace of the natural world.

For bird watchers, the diverse array of species offers endless delight. I’ve noticed informative signboards that guide you on which birds to look for if you observe closely. But it’s not just birds you’ll spot! Monkeys are also easily sighted throughout Nagano. I was quite surprised to stumble upon a group of about 20 playful macaques. While they kept their distance, I could clearly see larger, “grandfather-like” monkeys alongside smaller “kid” monkeys. Just a friendly reminder: there are plenty of warnings not to feed the wildlife, as they’re becoming increasingly accustomed to human presence. This is especially important when it comes to leaving food out, as hungry bears might also be interested!

Kamikochi: The Crown Jewel of the Japan Alps
Kamikochi is truly special, and Japan has taken great care to preserve its pristine beauty by limiting traffic into the area. Only designated buses and taxis are allowed, reducing pollution and other environmental impact.
Once you arrive in Kamikochi, you’ll be treated to a series of breathtaking sights. While Taisho Pond and Myojin Pond offer tranquil beauty, I particularly love walking along the paths beside the Azusa River. The water is incredibly clear and a stunning turquoise, and the gentle sound of the river flowing creates an incredibly peaceful experience. As I looked upriver, seeing where the clear water was coming from, with the majestic peaks of the Japan Alps towering in the background, I was filled with a profound sense of awe at the sheer scale of it all. It really made me realize how small I am in the grand scheme of nature.
One memorable moment happened along the Azusa River when I spotted two monkeys leisurely crossing on the rocks, turning them over as they searched for grubs or other snacks. Just behind me, two other tourists came along, and their faces lit up with excitement when I pointed out the monkeys to them. It’s these unexpected encounters that truly make the experience unforgettable.
Soon, your walk will lead you to Kappabashi, the iconic bridge that has become the symbol of Kamikochi. This is a perfect spot for photos and to simply soak in the panoramic views, perhaps even sketching the scene if you’re so inclined.

Immerse Yourself in Culture and History
Beyond the natural wonders of Kamikochi, the broader Nagano Prefecture is rich in traditional Japanese sites that are well worth exploring. For instance, Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City is a historic Buddhist temple, ranking among the oldest and most significant in Japan. You can experience its spiritual ambiance, perhaps even venturing through its unique underground passage, and then explore the lively Nakamise-dori shopping street leading up to the temple, where you can sample local snacks and discover traditional crafts.

On his last visit, my son made sure to include Matsumoto Castle. This stunning, original black castle miraculously escaped destruction during past wars and fires. Its unique architecture offers a captivating glimpse into Japan’s rich history and culture, truly allowing you to step back in time.

Convenient Accessibility for Your Japan Adventure
If you’re planning a trip to Tokyo, it’s absolutely worth including a visit to Nagano in your itinerary. You can reach Nagano from Tokyo by bullet train in about an hour and a half, making it a convenient and enjoyable journey. If you choose to venture further into the Japan Alps to experience Kamikochi, you’ll take a bus ride from Nagano station, which typically lasts about two hours. While the bullet train ride is relaxing and smooth, the bus journey takes you through winding mountain passes, so if you’re prone to motion sickness, don’t forget your Dramamine!
So, as the summer heat continues to climb, consider this your invitation to trade the sweat and discomfort for serenity and natural splendor. The Japan Alps aren’t just a destination; they’re an experience waiting to redefine your idea of a perfect summer vacation. I found that when I set aside my goal of hiking to a summit, I enjoyed the experience so much more. With easy access from Tokyo and a wealth of gentle walks, cultural treasures, and unique wildlife encounters, Nagano offers the refreshing escape you’ve been dreaming of. Why just endure summer in Japan when you can truly enjoy it? Start planning your cool escape to the Japan Alps today!
